Lilongwe District Commissioner (DC), Dr. Lawford Palani, has bemoaned lack of focus and direction in implementation of activities by some Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) working in the district.

Speaking over the weekend during the district’s commemoration of International Day of Persons with Disabilities held at Khokhwa Primary School in Traditional Authority (TA) Mazengera, the DC said some organisations are serving and promoting their own agendas and not the welfare of people in the district.

While commending the event organisers, Miral Welfare Foundation, for taking a centre stage in promoting the welfare of persons with disabilities in the area, Palani expressed dissatisfaction with how some organisations working in the district are implementing their projects, arguing they are doing so contrary to what they had initially presented to the Council.

“NGOs should borrow a leaf from Miral Welfare Foundation which has shown total commitment to assist government in uplifting the livelihoods of persons with disabilities in the district, which is exactly what they signed up for when coming into the district,” said Palani.

On the significance of the day, the DC said it is very important to commemorate the day considering how neglected persons with disabilities are in communities.
