Blantyre Residents To Obtain Injunction To Stop Current Mayor From Contesting For The Third Term

Some Blantyre residents want to obtain a court injunction to stop elections for Blantyre City Council Mayor after noting that the current Mayor, Wild Ndipo, is contesting for a third term.

They argue that this is against the Local Government Act.

One of the concerned citizens, John Kadammanja, said they are surprised with the intentions of the council to allow Ndipo run for a third term.

According to Ndipo who sounded unmoved when contacted, he argued that a Mayor is chosen by members of Parliament and Councillors.

He said he does not know whether residents have powers to intervene or not.

He said he is going to contest in the elections, slated for next week.

Section 7 (4) of the Local Government Act says one shall serve for a period of one year unless sooner replaced and shall be eligible to be re-elected for one additional term but in the case of a city council, a Mayor shall serve for a period of two and half years, unless sooner replaced and shall be eligible to be re-elected for one additional term.
