Monica Chakwera appointed as MANEPO’s matron

First Lady Monica Chakwera has accepted a role as matron for the Malawi Network of Older Persons’ Organisations (MANEPO).

MANEPO Executive Director, Andrew Kavala has confirmed the development, conveying, Madame Chakwera has a strong conviction that being old is not a crime.

” the first lady is committed to champion the cause of bridging the knowledge gap to ensure that lives of older men and women are protected and that they are given a voice to speak against abuses perpetrated at them.

There have been sporadic attacks on the elderly in Malawi over a misguided beliefs they practice witchcraft and use supernatural powers to stop rainfall, myths that have led to their attacks and some being killed over the misguided beliefs.
