Parliament to summon DPP for gagging ACB on Ashok Nair’s corruption case

The Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament has said it will summon the Director of Public Prosecutions Steven Kayuni to explain why he did not assent to the prosecution of Ashok Nair as requested by Anti-Corruption Bureau.

DPP denied ACB prosecution consent on grounds that the graftbursting body submitted an interim investigation report on the matter.

The office of DPP has since asked ACB to submit a complete report of investigations.

“It is impossible to make a decision on an interim investigation report as the Ashok matter has an interim investigation report. It is actually surprising to note that there are findings and recommendations on an interim investigation report,” reads part of the letter dated January 14, 2022 addressed to ACB Director General Martha Chizuma.

The development has attracted public anger with the legal Affairs Committee of Parliament summoning Kayuni over the matter.

Chairperson of the committee, Peter Dimba, has confirmed of the development.

Dimba said the DPP is supposed to report to the committee, as provided in the law.

Nair was arrested by ACB agents for allegedly being involved in corruption in land deals allegedly involving former Lands minister Kezzie Msukwa and Sattar.
