High Court Halts Nkhudzi Water Project

High court judge Justice Mandala Mambulasa has granted an injunction stopping further work of water project in the Lake Malawi National Park at Nkhudzi hill in Mangochi.

This is a case where three non-governmental organizations through counsel Paul Mzembe are challenging a decision by the Southern Region Water Board (SRWB) to implement the project in the world heritage protected area on environmental protection grounds.

Among the arguments, Mzembe says allowing the project to proceed without following environmental protection procedures would lead to the loss of the World Heritage status of the UNESCO-protected Lake Malawi National Park.

The claimants are the Centre for Environmental Policy, National Youth Network on Climate Change, and Movement for Environmental Action.
