Heavy rains hit Karonga, several houses destroyed

Several houses including part of Maro Primary School in the area of Traditional Authority Kilupula in Karonga district have been damaged by heavy rains last night.

According to Primary Education Advisor for the area Robson Kondowe, teachers’ office at the school had its roof blown-off consequently “damaging books and other materials in the office”.

Kondowe said some teachers houses have also been affected including one which was being used as a hostel, accommodating about 20 standard eight female learners.

He said: “These pupils sleep in this house to study because the school has some battery-powered electricity. Fortunately, except one who sustained a minor injury, they all escaped unhurt”.
