Senior Resident Magistrate Clemence Chamwenda of Dedza Court has jailed 32 year old Charles Chimwendo, a Malawi Revenue Authority employee, to six years imprisonment with hard labour for stealing tax-payer money amounting to K12 million.

Chamwenda said Chimwendo, who pleaded guilty to the charge, had a duplicate receipt book that he issued to unsuspecting taxpayers upon unauthorized collection of revenue.

On Monday, April 25, 2022, Chimwendo was convicted after admitting to have stolen the money arguing he was possessed by evil spirits at the material time.

In mitigation, he asked for the court’s leniency; saying apart from being a first offender, he was the bread winner to his family.

However, on May 4, 2022, Chamwenda quashed his mitigation factors and slapped the convict with a six-year jail sentence.

Chimwendo hails from Chimwendo Village in Traditional Authority Mzukuzuku in Mzimba district.
