Dr Ruth Chimutu suspended over death of Kottana Chidyaonga

The Medical Council of Malawi (MCM) has found Dr. Ruth Chimutu guilty for medical negligence in the autopsy error report on the death of Kottana Chidyaonga.

Dr. Chimutu is said to have mistakenly administered the lethal drug veruconium bromide that led to the death of 22-year-old Kotanna Chidyaonga in January 2020.

The Council’s Assistant Registrar Richard Ndovie has confirmed of the development in an interview with the press.

According to Ndovie, Dr Chimutu has been suspended for three months during which period she will undergo remedial orientation in the Accident and Emergency Department the same period at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.

The Council has also established that it was the veruconium bromide that led to Kotanna’s death and not the termic poison as declared by Pathologist Dr. Charles Dzamalala.

Meanwhile, family members of late Kottana Chidyaonga are yet to comment on the matter.
