Seven people arrested over Liberty Properties Company robbery incident

Police in Lilongwe have arrested seven people in connection to the breaking and theft that occurred at Liberty Properties Company, Njewa location along Mchinji road, on April 13, 2022 where items worth 27 million kwacha were stolen.

The suspects have been identified as Gift Kuthani, 34, of Mgona Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Kaduya, Phalombe, Nicholas Boston, 24, Maweru Village, T/A Chiwere, Dowa, Isaac Kauma, 26, Kochera Village, T/A Mlomba, Machinga, Alick Adamson, 58, Phokolo Village, T/A Masumbankhunda, Lilongwe, Gift Zulu, 39, Mkumba Village, T/A Zulu, Mchinji, Aubrey Kadango, 27, Kavuthethe Village, T/A Chimwala, Mangochi, and Osman Chisinga, 39, Kanjinga Village, T/A Kaphuka in Dedza District.

On the day of the incident, four security guards under Pempho Security Services, reported on night duty at around 17:00 hours.

However, when the owner of the properties, a Lebanese national, reported for work in the morning, he found the main entrance gate wide open and no single watchman was within the vicinity.

Upon entering the premises he found that both his office and the warehouse were broken into.

He immediately discovered the missing of 5 computers, 3 solar batteries, one plasma screen, 35 rolls of mesh wire, and other items all worth over K27, 000, 000 (twenty-seven million kwacha).

Meanwhile, police have recovered some items that include 14 rolls of mesh wire, one computer and others.

Police have also impounded a motor vehicle Mitsubishi Canter, registration number NA 7141, that was used to ferry the stolen items from scene of the crime to Area 24 within Lilongwe City.

The suspects have been charged with Breaking Into a Building and Committing a Felony There-in, which contravenes section 311 of the Penal Code.

One of the arrested suspects is the said security guards who reported for duty on the night of the incident and others are still at large.
