A 32 year old man identified as Mike, was mistakenly beaten as a thief when he batched into his girlfriend’s house on Wednesday night at Chitakale trading Centre in Mulanje district.
An eye witness said, Mike, an Airtel money agent in Thyolo district wanted to pay a surprise visit to his girlfriend (Annie) house but due traffic on the road, he was delayed and reached the girls house at around 9:30 PM.
“He tried to knock the door of his girlfriend house but no one was responding, her phone was off and they could not get in touch,” She said.
She added that he thought of knocking on the bedroom’s window but when he was about to do so, three men who were passing by stopped and started beating him while shouting for people to come out of their houses as a thief since they have never seen a man on the house.
According to her, when people heard the shouts they come out of their houses including the girlfriend and that was when Mike explained to the people that he is not a thief but a visitor to his girlfriend.
“By the time the poor man explained the story to the people present at the scene he was already beaten and soaked in blood,” she concluded.
Commenting on the matter, Annie, the girlfriend said her phone went off and decided to charge it whilst it was still off then she slept off.
“I did not hear the knock on the door because i slept off, to add on that we did not agree on anything like he will be coming to the house today i believe that is the more reason why i went to bed early today,” Annie explained.
The man was taken to the nearest clinic for treatment.
