Two people arrested for ransacking Energem filling station in Nsanje

Two men are in police in Nsanje district in connection to the theft of K38 million cash and 25 liters of petrol worth K50000 at Tengani Energem Filling Station.

Nsanje Police spokesperson, Agnes Zalakoma has identified the two suspects as Edward Nkhoma, 32 of Tomasi Village in Traditional Authority Changata in Thyolo and Saidi Kachingwe, 45 from Chemusa Village in Traditional Authority Machinjiri in Blantyre.

They were using motor vehicle registration number BT10673.

She said the owner of the filling station, Phillip Chiku, 48, reported that a gang of criminals armed with metal bars, panga knives and wooden sticks stormed his filling station and attacked a watchman and a fuel attendant.

“They tied them with linya ropes before stealing the money and fuel. The thugs left and later a customer came for refueling. He was asked to untie the two which he did,” explains Zalakoma.

Zalakoma adds detectives and uniformed police plus members of the communities searched for the criminals but to no avail.

“A motor vehicle was used by the thugs was recovered at Mtolongo village in the area of Senior Chief Tengani where the two suspects were arrested. Members of the public who were angry begun to assault them severely but police managed to get them away,” says Zalakoma.

The suspects are reportedly receiving medical treatment at Nsanje District Hospital.

Meanwhile, police in the district have since intensified investigations to trace the other suspects and recover the money stolen.
