Early Life:

Young M.A was born on the 3rd of April 1992 in Brooklyn, New York, the United States. Her real name is Katorah Marreroshe later adopted her stage name Young M.A. Her father is Puerto Rican while her mother Latasha Carlisle Blackmanis Jamaican.

When she was just a year old her father was sent to prison and wasn’t released until she was 11. Due to her incarceration, she was raised by her single mother and her uncles and grew up with her older brother Kenneth Marrero.

All of her family members were passionate about music even performing freestyle in their neighborhood. Young M.A also has a younger sister who’s 13 years younger than her and a grandmother who she has a close relationship with her.

Her grandmother G MA is the only person allowed to call Young MA (Nunu) a nickname her grandmother gave to her when she was born.

When Young M.A was just 7 years old the family relocated to Chesterfield Virginia which is also around the same time that M.A started getting curious about the other girls her age.

Early Career:

Young M.A made up her mind to start her rap career when she was only 9 years old after getting a Karaoke machine for Christmas and making her own studio in her bedroom.

Growing up she got a chance to perform at a few open mics, random family parties, and some events. While living in Virginia, Young M.A became a leader of a rap group known as Money Makers.

The group members of consisted her and three guy friends that lived in her neighborhood. She would still spend every summer in New York.

Then her family decided to move back to Brooklyn and it was around this time she was about 17 years old, she eventually came out to her mother telling her she was gay.

Something else that notified her family was that she was sporty from an early age playing football, basketball, baseball, and kickball.

It was also around this age that several managers told her that she needed to be more feminine if she wanted to become a star. Young M.A eventually gained the confidence to accept who she was and not let others dictate how she would dress or act.


On the 6th of September 2009 when Young M.A was just 17 years old her 20 years old brother Kenneth was killed in Pennsylvania by a member of his own gang.

Following this tragic incident and while completing her senior year of high school, Young M.A went through many months of depression. She also went to three therapy sessions at her school but discontinued them as she didn’t want to open up and talk about it.

That was the same time when Young M.A got into bad arguments with her mother so she eventually left her parent’s house to state her ex-girlfriend’s house.

From there she started taking drugs including vodka and also admits to getting arrested this time. After high school, she continued her pursuit of music even meeting a few record producers and going to the studio.

Music Career:

Young M.A put together two mixtapes including Young M.A Mixtape and Sleep Walkin released with her own money.

To pay her bills she had to pick up some regular gigs including working at the department store T.J. Maxx for some time before working at a New York City restaurant chain called Shake Shack. 

Another musical influence in Young M.A’s life is 50 Cent. She recalls hearing his song Many Men for the first time while she was driving and that really inspired her to pursue it full time.

Young M.A made a slight change to her moniker going from Young MA to Young M.A. She also needed to start gaining a following so she started her YouTube channel way back in 2012 which was short-lived and she posted only three videos.


Young M.A has a net worth of $3 million and her biggest break came in 2014 after she dropped her freestyle titled Brooklyn. This would go on to become a viral hit and the music video of the song has more than 20 million views as of 2022.

But with the release of this popular remix came some backlash, particularly from a man named Boyce Watkins.

He accused Young M.A of “Promoting violent, negative, energy into the community that may get her killed and is killing her own individual”. Despite what this guy had to say Young M.A. became more popular.

In 2015 Young M.A released the new song Body Bagand dropped her debut album Sleep Walkin. Her album featured the tracks Get This Money, Karma Krys, and HennyNHoes. 

In May of 2016 Young M.A released her breakthrough single Ooouuu which would become a massive hit. She bravely released the song as a single without promotion but the track ended up peaking at number 19 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Charts.

Following this, she started getting noticed by popular rappers like Nicki Minaj, French Montana, Jadakiss, Uncle Murda, ASAP Ferg, and Bryan Mathers, amongst others. She also collaborated with the likes of Young Thug, Dae DAE, and C.A.S.H.

She also went on to perform the song at the 2016 BET Hip Hop Awards and even received a Public invitation from Beyonce to perform the song during her Formation world tour. This was in New Jersey on the 7th of October 2016.

It was the first time Young M.A perform somewhere that wasn’t a club though she never got to meet the queen herself. Although she did get a chance to meet Jay-Z.

That event earned her several opportunities and was even offered a small role on the hit television show called Empire but she was quick to turn that one down. She stated that it was another lane and I was going to become a rap star.

In 2017, Young M.A released an EP titled Herstoryand then on March 31st of that year, she played her first show on the tour with 21 Savage starting in Houston.

In 2018 with the upcoming release of her new album there is no denying that Young M.A is at the top of her rap game. The album featured songs such as Praktice and Car Confession produced by Antwan Thompson.

On September 27, 2019, Young M.A came up with the release of her debut studio album Herstory in the Makingwhich debuted at #16 on the Billboard 200.

Then in May of 2020, she dropped an extended play Red Flu and then followed up by her second studio album Off the Yak in May 2021.

As a featured artist, Young M.A appeared on other artists’ songs including Murder Game, Hella Bars, Thot, 30, Spend It (Remix), F.B.G.M, Pump Fakin, and Move Like a Boss, among others.

Acting Appearances:

Apart from releasing songs, Young M.A also appeared in a number of TV shows including the HBO Vice News Tonight. She then made her appearance on late night talk show The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
