CONGESTION HITS NTCHISI PRISON

Police in charge at Ntchisi have complained about the over loading of prisoners at Ntchisi prison.

During a court users committee meeting, National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) Trust, Ntchisi Prison station Officer Ernest Kavwenje said they are having difficulties in providing food and water to the inmates since the prison was designed to accommodate 100 inmates but as now we have 223 prisoners.

Out of the 223 inmates, 169 are convicts while 59 are on remand.

“We are failing to send some inmates to Lilongwe prison, which is known as Maula due to lack of funds,” said Kavwenje

NICE Ntchisi civic education officer Emmanuel Banda said they will discuss the matter with some stakeholders to see how best they can solve the challenges.

“We are making sure that people’s rights not to be violated and we will strengthen structures at district as well as area level to promote access to justice,” said Banda.
