MHRC speaks on viral Kalibu Academy video

The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has disclosed that a video clip which is circulating on social media showing students harassing another in a dormitory of a school, is from Kalibu Academy in Blantyre.

According to Victor Khwima, MHRC Regional Human Rights Coordinator for the South, the incident happened on November 16 this year and it involved Form 5 and form 4 students, who picked up a fight over a girl.

This is happening at a time the commission is scheduled to release a report of on sexual abuse and corporal punishment allegations against the school.

MHRC’s Executive Secretary Habiba Osman said the Commission will still continue its investigations to get to the bottom of the circulating video clip.

Authorities at Kalibu Academy have also admitted that the video clip is connected to their school but was quick to say that the students involved in the video clip are no longer their students as they have written their final examinations.

The school has added that it will do its own investigations and share the findings with MHRC.

“The school will further share a reports of its findings and sanctions with Malawi Human Rights Commission and the Ministry of Education who have taken an interest in the matter,” read Kalibu Academy’s press statement on the viral video clip.

The school has since assured the general public that it is committed to continue giving its student quality and affordable education and nurturing them into future leaders and responsible citizens with Christian values.

Commission Executive Secretary Habiba Osman clarifies that this will not stop them from getting to the root of the video clip.

In June this year, there were cases against the same institution which alleged that there is a cell used to punish student who break school rules such as speaking Chichewa since the school only allows students to speak English and Shona.
