Police pounce on Chilima’s fake resignation letter

The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has launched a manhunt for unknown people who allegedly authored a fake resignation letter of the country’s Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima.

Last week, the social media was awash with a resignation letter from Chilima who is also President of the United Transformation Movement (UTM).

The letter sparkled debate with many claiming that some Malawi Congress Party (MCP) propagandist were behind the fake letter.

Others claimed that the letter was authored to divert the attention of Malawians from the commission of inquiry report of the arrest of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Director General Martha Chizuma.

Speaking in an interview with the press on Sunday, National Police Spokesperson Peter Kalaya revealed that the law enforcers have launched an investigation on the matter.

Kalaya claimed that initial investigation established that the statement which circulated on 3 January 2023 is not authentic.

Kalaya has disclosed that police are hunting for those behind it, further stressing, it is an offense to author and even share the fake document on social media under the Electronic Transactions and Cyber Security Act.
