NGOs collaborate to reduce abortion, maternal related deaths

Family Planning Association of Malawi (FPAM) with the support from Large Anonymous Donors (LAD), has introduced a K43 million post integrated abortion care service project to help in reducin g maternal and abortions related to death in Lilongwe and Ntcheu districts.

FPAM’s Service Delivery Manager- Modester Kasawala said the number of people dying from self-abortion and lack of post abortion treatment is rising in the country.

She said, “Majority shun post abortion complication treatment in hospitals because they are afraid of being arrested especially that the law prohibits self-induced abortions in the country which is increasing maternal deaths”.

The Non-Governmental Organization is training health care workers in public hospitals, health centres and clinics on how best they can handle a complicated abortion case and while other hospitals are being supported with equipment of helping the abortion cases.

Bwaila hospital Safe Motherhood Coordinator, Teresa Kabaghe praised the NGO for the good work, saying the trainings and the equipments will improve service delivery in the hospital.

Kabaghe said this will help in giving more knowledge and skills to the health workers in their provision of post abortion care services to reduce abortion complications.
