Two men drowned in separate incidents in Rumphi and Lilongwe, after beer drinking sprees

Two men have drowned in separate incidents at Mlalaji River in Kamwe area and Bondi River in Nyambwali village in Rumphi.

The police have identified the deceased as Chisomo Yona, 34, of Kasabwe Village under Traditional Authority Kabudula in Lilongwe, and Fighton Chihana, an adult of Nyambwali village under Traditional Authority Chikulamayembe in Rumphi.

According to police spokesperson Sergeant Tupeliwe Kabwilo, the first deceased, Yona, had gone for a beer drinking spree at a nearby village in Kamwe and drowned on his way back.

The second one, Chihana, left home on January 11, 2023, and went to a nearby village known as Muhangula for local beer and drowned on his way back as he attempted to cross a flooded River.

Medical reports indicate that both men died due to suffocation following drowning.
