Old Mutual donates MK60 million to flood victims, offers free mortuary services at Mthunzi

Following President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera’s declaration of State of the national disaster due to cyclone Freddy which has claimed over 200 lives, several companies including one of the leading insurance companies, Old Mutual Malawi has moved in to assist the displaced families.

The company on Wednesday donated K60 million to Malawi Red Cross Society to support people affected by Tropical Cyclone Freddy.

Old Mutual has also offered Mortuary services to its partner Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital up to 50% capacity.
Speaking after the handover ceremony, Old Mutual Malawi Group Chief Finance Officer Vera Zulu said the company is deeply saddened with the effect of Cyclone Freddy hence the donation.

“As a responsible business, we desire to be a certain friend in uncertain times. Therefore, this donation represents not only our organization’s commitment to supporting communities in times of crisis, but also our deep appreciation for the incredible work that Red Cross and its volunteers do each and every day.

Through our donation, we hope to contribute to the important work being done by Red Cross Malawi, as they continue to provide rescue services, emergency shelter, food, water, and other critical supplies to those affected by the cyclone,” said Zulu.

On his part Malawi Red Cross Society communications and resource mobilisation specialist Felix Washoni thanked Old Mutual for the donation.

“This is a timely response which will go along way to support our efforts. The needs of the people in the camps are enormous, “said Washoni.

Washoni further appealed to other willwishers in the country to follow Old Mutual’s gesture in supporting flood victims.

Meanwhile, Chakwera has declared 14 days of mourning.
