Running battle between police and an angry mob in Mulanje

An angry mob in Mulanje at Chinakanaka trading center destroyed Chisitu Police Unit in protest of the arrest of 12 people from the trading center on Saturday.

The furious community members blocked Thyolo-Mulanje road at Chinakanaka and with the closure of Midima road following the damage of Thuchira Bridge.

Spokesperson for Mulanje Police, Sergeant Innocent Moses has confirmed the development and the law enforcers dispersed the mob with teargas.

On Saturday 1 April 2023, police in Mulanje arrested eleven people from Chinakanaka who staged protests at the district police station demanding the release of one of their own, only identified as Nkwapatira.

Nkwapatira was arrested on Saturday morning in connection to the violence and looting of property belonging to a certain person at Chinakanaka who was accused of being behind a spate of robberies at the trading center.
