Court orders dismissal of teacher who embezzled exam fees for standard 8 candidates

The Dowa First Grade Magistrate Court has recommended the dismissal of a primary school teacher who misappropriated examination fees for about 18 Standard 8 candidates at Manondo Primary School in the district.

State prosecutor Joseph Banda told the court that the accused, Obed Kasonda Banda, committed the offence in September last year when he was tasked to pay the examination fees to Malawi National Examinations Board through mobile money.

According to Banda, instead of paying MANEB, the accused used the funds for his personal gains a development that saw the learners failing to sit for this year’s PLSCE examinations.

Banda pleaded guilty to the offence.

Passing his verdict, First Grade Magistrate Robert Botha also handed an 18-month suspended sentence to the convict to reimburse the money to the candidates.
