Police in Mzimba have placed in custody a 45 year old man Givat Qoto from Msangula Ndolo village in Traditional Authority Mmbelwa in Mzimba district for beating to death Japheth Msimuko 27. This occurred in Edingeni in the district.
It is reported that during the night of Tuesday July 4, 2023, Qoto was on night patrols guarding his Maize field after observing that unknown Criminals were stealing and harvesting his dry maize.
During that night while in the maize field he saw two unknown Criminals stealing his maize, he managed to overpower one Criminal who at that time was armed with Panga knife while him (Qoto) was armed with a Hoe handle which he used to assault Msimuko. The other one managed to escape.
Later Qoto called the Community Policing Chairperson for the area telling him the whole ordeal.

joined Qoto to identify the criminal (now deceased), only to realise that he was Japheth Msimuko who is also uncle to the owner of the Maize field (Givat Qoto).
The matter was reported to Police who visited the scene together with a Medical personnel from Edingeni Health Center.
Postmortem results revealed that death was due to head injuries secondary to assault.
Police are advising the people in the district not to take the law into their own hands to avoid similar deaths.
Qoto will appear in court soon to answer a charge leveled against him.
