Two arrested over torching of Chapananga Police Unit in Chikwawa

Police in Chikwawa district have arrested two people on suspicion that they were involved in setting ablaze Chapananga Police Unit, damaging police houses and stealing various properties at the facility on Tuesday 25 July, 2023.

Chikwawa police Public Relations Officer Dickson Matemba has identified the suspects as Fredrick Chiphaka, 28, from Liyada village, Traditional Authority Mpando in Ntcheu District and Evance Malefula, 27, of Chaphyinja village, Traditional Authority Chapananga in Chikwawa District.

Matemba said the duo were spotted during the fracas that erupted when people around Chapananga Trading Centre invaded the said police formation and demanded that the police to release into their custody a suspect who murdered Chimwemwe Hamilton, 18, of Garonga Village, Traditional Authority Chapananga in Chikwawa District.

“The angry mob resorted into violence after they learnt that the suspect had already been ferried to Chikwawa Police Station which prompted them to torch police facilities and loot various properties.”, he said.

The parent station accompanied by Mitole Police Mobile Service officers rushed to the scene and whilst there, the angry people also blocked the road with logs of trees and big Stones to make it impassable, which were later cleared by police.

The duo will answer charges of arson, theft and malicious damage after the completion of investigations.
