Kawale Police deputy spokesperson Prisca Kuyere-Mtikwa confirmed the arrest of the ex-Malawi Defense Force soldier, Rodrick Phiri, aged 22.
She stated that Phiri had been dismissed from the MDF in May. Prisca Kuyere-Mtikwa explained that Phiri initially convinced one victim that he had connections within the MDF to secure jobs for him and seven others.
He then lured the unsuspecting victims to a lodge in Area 23, where he defrauded them of money before making his escape.
The victims subsequently reported the incident to Kamuzu Barracks Military Police, who later apprehended Phiri and handed him over to Kawale Police.
Phiri now faces theft by trickery charges and is expected to appear in court soon.
