The chief resident magistrate court in Lilongwe has adjourned to 11th December 2023 hearing of a case in which the South African government want Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary to be extradited there to answer some court charges.
However, while observing that the state should have been vigilant in making sure that the case is progressing has ordered the state to pay MK560 thousand for the costs of today’s proceedings.
Bushiris lawyer Wapona Kita said they are oky with the directive by the court although they were prepared to ask questions to the state witness, Sibongire Mnzinyathi who is Director of Public Prosecutions from South Africa.
Senior state advocate Dzikondianthu Malunda on the other hand ssid they will abide by the court order to pay for the costs but was quick to say that the state was happy that the court has allowed their prayer for the adjustment.
The adjournment follows a request by the state which asked the court to give them not less than 21 days to prepare for the case since they accessed some case documents from South Africa late.
