Man commits suicide over loans from village banks

A 69-year-old man, identified as Levison Lington has been found dead, after he reportedly hanged himself to the roof of his house at Khombe Madzi, in Dowa district.

Dowa Police, spokesperson, Sergeant Alice Sitima says on the material day (Monday, November 6, 2023), at around 7am, Lington’s wife Sautsamanja Jonas left for a maize mill, leaving him working around the house.

When she came back, she found Lington lying dead at the verandah of their house, after the rope he used to hang himself had presumably broken due to his weight.

Lington left a note, saying he had obtained loans from three different village banks and had been approached by the village bank members to pay back the money, but he failed to do so.

When confronted again in September he promised to pay back the money at the end of October, 2023.

However, due to reasons beyond his control, he failed to honor the promise and decided to hang himself.

Postmortem conducted established that the death was due to suffocation secondary to strangulation.

Meanwhile, Police in the district are advising people to refrain from taking their own lives but rather, seek counselling from relevant authorities.
