Two men fined K50,000 each for damaging K5000 bank note

The Mchinji Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court has ordered two men to pay a fine of K50,000 each for damaging K5000 banknote which is contrary to section 54(2)(c) of the Reserve Bank of Malawi Act.

According to Mchinji police spokesperson Limbani Mpinganjira, they two identified as Tsanzo Likisho and Kelvin Elard, both 23 years old were netted on 27 December 2023.

State prosecutors in the case Peter Fuluwenza, told the court that the two failed to share the money properly and they agreed to split it in half so that each would take his share.

Appearing in court, the two pleaded not guilty to the charge of damaging currency which prompted the state to present three witnesses.

Fluuwenza asked the court to give them a stiff punishment so that it will be a lesson to other people who think in such a childish way.

Passing judgement, Senior Resident Magistrate, Yohane Nkhata agreed with the state and ordered the two to pay a fine of K50,000 each, and if they fail to pay, they will be jailed for one year.
