The Anglican Church has elected Bishop William Mchombo as its new bishop for the Diocese of Upper Shire.

Vicar General of the Diocese of Upper Shire, Reverend Grant Tebulo has confirmed in a statement made available to faceofmalawi yesterday.

Tebulo said Bishop Mchombo was elected at the Episcopal synod which met in Lusaka, Zambia yesterday.

Tebulo had been serving in that role in an acting capacity after the church parted ways with Bishop Brighton Malasa following some wrangles within the Diocese.

Last year the church failed to elect the new Bishop twice.

Mchombo was educated at the University of Zimbabwe and has been Bishop of Eastern Zambia since 2003.
