Death toll in Nkhotakota flash floods rise to 6

Death toll in the Nkhotakota flash floods has risen to 6, according to authorities.

Nkhotakota District Council spokesperson Wongani Mkandawire says currently they do not have details of the dead bodies.

This comes as the floods have rendered over 9000 people destitute and affected at least 14 000 others.

Meanwhile, Nkhotakota North lawmaker, Henry Chimunthu Banda fears delays to fix the four cut-off sections on the M5 road will have negative impact on the country’s economy.

The lakeshore road is impassable after being cut off in four sections of Kaombe, Walemera, Dwangwa and Mkoma and the contractor is currently fixing some sections.

Chimunthu Banda, who once served as Speaker of Parliament, says Illovo Sugar Company is next month expected to start sugar production and the damaged road might affect transportation issues.
