Case of two Police officers accused of negligence and grievous harm that led to amputation of right arm and all fingers of 13-year-old boy committed to senior court

First Grade Magistrate George Chimombo of Mulanje Magistrate’s Court today transferred proceedings of a case involving two police officers accused of negligence leading to a 13-year-old boy’s arm amputation.

The two officers, Frackson Chigalu and Charles Mbewe, allegedly tied the boy’s hands with a rubber belt for four days.

Magistrate Chimombo cited Section 74 of the Criminal Proceedings and Evidence Code for the transfer decision to the senior Resident Magistrate’s Court.

Counsel Brenda Khwale from the Centre for Human Rights, Education, and Assistance (CHREA) requested an adjournment due to the deteriorating condition of the boy, who is the key witness.

The case has been tentatively adjourned to May 6, 2024, as the boy’s health remains a concern.
