Business has come to a standstill at Tsoka Market in the capital Lilongwe as vendors who sell second hand clothes are protesting against the newly introduced tax by the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA).

The Tonse Alliance government of President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has introduced several taxes to support the 2024/2025 national budget and one of it being hiking tax on the importation of second hand clothes.

This has resulted in the rise of prices of second hand clothes in the country, putting many vendors who sale the said clothes at the disadvantage.

Leader of the disgruntled vendors Alyson Chinunga the newly hiked tax as made several vendors to make losses in their businesses.

Chinunga has since asked government through MRA to consider backtracking on the matter.
