Former ESCOM Board Chair Jean Mathanga’s case back in court

The High Court of Malawi’s financial criminal division in Blantyre has resumed hearing of a K4 billion corruption case involving former Escom board chairperson Jean Mathanga and three others.

Mathanga and the others namely; former Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) chief executive officer John Kandulu, former director of procurement Fanuel Nkhono and senior procurement manager Emmilius Kandapo are answering charges bordering on flouting procurement procedures.

Earlier in the morning, High Court Judge Violet Chipawo, who has taken over the matter from Justice Sylvester Kalembera, (now Justice of Appeal) delivered her ruling on the defence’s submission on whether the court should restart the case or proceed from where it stopped in 2021.

The defence argued that it was not clear if the court had all the records presented before the previous court.

But in her ruling, Chipawo directed that the matter should continue from where it left, about two years ago, because the court records are intact and that transcription of the previous proceedings is underway.

The matter has been adjourned to this afternoon where the Anti-Corruption Bureau, which is prosecuting the matter, is expected to parade its sixth witness Betty Mahuka— who is former Escom director of finance.
