Japanese government hand over Kanengo Power Substation

The Japanese government has officially handed over the Kanengo Power Substation, expected to improve electricity capacity in Lilongwe from 83 MVA to 158 MVA.

Japanese Ambassador to Malawi Yoichi Oya said the substation, upgraded to a grant of K23 billion, reflects his government’s commitment to supporting Malawi’s socio-economic development.

Oya was saying this today in Lilongwe at Bingu International Convention Centre  during the handover ceremony of the substation which has been upgraded to the tune of K23 billion.

Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola appreciated the Japanese government, stating that the upgrading project will strengthen the energy sector and ensure consistent power supply to support agriculture, tourism, and mining as key areas of economic growth.

The project will help the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) connect about 58,000 new customers in Lilongwe and surrounding areas (Dowa, Kasungu, Ntchisi, and Mchinji)
