At least 300 students from the University of Malawi (UNIMA) have expressed concern with the delay to get their upkeep allowances from the Higher Education Students Loans and Grants Board (HESLG), a development they lament is effecting their education.
Some of the students claimed that they have been engaging HESLG officials but to no avail.
Student’s representative Thanks Elia Mwalwanda said the delay has negatively affected their academic life.
“The students are having divided attention in class as they are engaged in thinking of how they will survive because they don’t have food and others are on the verge of being evicted from their hostels for not paying rentals” said Mwalwanda.
HESLG spokesperson Millie Kasunda has dismissed that there is delay arguing that process takes two weeks to complete.
She concluded that the students will get their money by next by next week.
