Driver Fined K2.4 Million for Fatal Reckless Driving in Liwonde

Thirty-eight-year-old Taibu Mkwinda has been fined K2,430,000 for causing a fatal accident due to reckless driving without a license and insurance. Of this amount, K2 million is to be paid as compensation to the family of the deceased.
During the hearing at Liwonde First Grade Magistrate Court, it was revealed that Mkwinda was driving a lorry from Liwonde to Nsanama at an excessive speed.
State prosecutor Luke Lazaro reported that Mkwinda lost control of the vehicle and struck a male cyclist, Anafi Afala, who was carrying a female passenger, Joyce James, and her 3-year-old child.
James suffered severe abdominal injuries and later succumbed to her injuries at Mlomba Health Centre in Machinga.
