Police in Mangochi are keeping in custody two ex-convicts identified as Bashir Ayami 20 and Antonio Stanley 34 from Traditional Authority Jalasi in the district for being found in possession of a pistol and two live rounds of ammunition yesterday within Namwera Trading Centre.
According to Mangochi police spokesperson, Amina Daudi, Bashir Ayami, the first suspect has been on the run after he escaped from Mangochi Prison in March 2024 while the second suspect Antonio Stanley was also convicted for robbery.
“Some members of the community reported the suspects to police that the suspects were in possession of offensive weapon within Namwera Trading Centre.
“Later, team of detectives went to the spot and arrest the two who were found with the said pistol serial R1YGCPRYSO1-2300846 and two live ammunition” she said
Daudi further said that Antonio Stanley was also found with a bicycle confessed that he has stolen if at Nsanama in Machinga District
However, Ayami has been charged with escaping from prison and possession of firearm without consent while Stanley will soon appear before court to answer the charges levelled against him
