The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) has endorsed the planned demonstrations organized by lawyers under the Malawi Law Society (MLS) on September 12, 2024.
The lawyers are pushing for the Tonse Alliance government to speed up the enactment of the Bills.
In a statement signed by CCJP National Coordinator, Boniface Chibwana, there is a need to deal with urgency judicial reforms, which must address corruption, partisanship, and impunity within the judicial system.
Chibwana , has in this statement referred to the Pastoral Letter of the Catholic Bishops of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) that was released on February 25, 2024, titled The Sad Story of Malawi.
“As the bishops pointed out, ‘Some judges and magistrates are accountable to no one. They take years to hear a case, yet the Judiciary does nothing to discipline them,” reads part of the statement.
