A group of 10 men has been arrested at Kamwendo Fuel Station in Mchinji after they were caught buying fuel in jerrycans, following rumors of an upcoming fuel shortage. Six of the men were also found in possession of cannabis.

Police spokesperson Limbani Mpinganjira confirmed that the suspects will face charges for illegal fuel possession and cannabis use. They are expected to appear in court soon.

In November 2024, The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) suspended  banned the buying of petrol in jerrycans or drums from service stations across the country.
