Two men identified as Harold Moya and Moffat George, who were arrested in 2020 on suspicion of murder, face an extended wait of up to four years for their case to be heard, despite the alleged victim, Jekapu Gwazayemwe, being found alive.
Moya and George spent nearly three years in detention after being accused of killing Gwazayemwe, who was later discovered working in Mozambique. The murder charges against the duo were officially dropped on May 16, 2023.
However, the two men have since filed a lawsuit against the police for wrongful arrest and imprisonment. Their lawyer, Tiyamike Chigoneka, expressed frustration over the slow pace of justice, stating that their case should have been heard within 28 days of being submitted to court. Ten months have now passed without any progress.
When queried about the delay, court officials reportedly responded that they are still addressing cases that were filed in 2020.
The prolonged delay has raised concerns about inefficiencies in the judicial system, as the men continue to wait for justice and accountability for their wrongful detention.
