The First Grade Magistrate court in Dowa yesterday ordered an Ethiopian national to pay a fine of K600,000 for unlawfully wounding four people at Dzaleka Refugee Camp.
Dowa police publicist, Alice Sitima, told Zodiak Online that the convict, Tashala Yohanes, was arrested on 15th January this year, after he wounded four members of the camp’s community policing group known as Sungu-Sungu.
The court heard through the state prosecutor, Vincent Ntalawe, that during the night of 19th November last year, the victims were patrolling the camp when they encountered Yohanes.
Sub-Inspector Ntalawe said upon questioning him, Yohanes aged 32, produced a panga knife and started assaulting the victims before he was joined by his fellow Ethiopians.
In his judgement, Magistrate Yohane Nkhata ordered the convict to pay K600,000, in default, he should be sentenced to nine months imprisonment with hard labour.
