Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) has announced the immediate suspension of all projects funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) following the agency’s financial withdrawal.

According to a press statement from LUANAR, the university cited a lack of resources to sustain the programs without USAID’s financial backing, making the suspension unavoidable.

“This decision has affected both staff members and students. Employees working under the USAID-funded projects have been instructed to cease their activities immediately, while students benefiting from these projects are advised to explore alternative funding options or consider discontinuing their studies,” reads part of the statement.

Meanwhile, education expert Benedicto Kondowe has called for an urgent meeting involving the government and other stakeholders to discuss possible interventions.

“There is a need for swift solutions to minimize the impact on the education sector and other affected areas. The government must take proactive measures to ensure continuity for the affected students and projects,” Kondowe stated.

The suspension is expected to have a ripple effect on ongoing research, agricultural programs, and student sponsorships, raising concerns about the long-term implications on the country’s education and development sectors.

Authorities are yet to provide alternative solutions, and affected stakeholders continue to await further guidance.
