The Senior Magistrate’s Court in Lilongwe has sentenced 24-year-olds Yamikani Komakoma and Kondwani Sekani to 12 years in prison with hard labor after they were found guilty of assaulting a fellow security guard.
According to Lingadzi Police spokesperson Constable Maria Kumwenda, the court heard from Sub Inspector Morton Munthali, a state witness, that the two convicts were security guards in Area 47 and lived together in Kauma with their colleague Chikumbutso.
On the night of March 3, 2024, at midnight, the duo returned home intoxicated and became violent when they found that no dinner had been prepared. A heated argument broke out, leading them to stab their colleague in a sensitive area with a knife, leaving him seriously injured.
During the trial, the accused pleaded for leniency, citing intoxication and family responsibilities. However, the prosecution urged the court to impose a harsh sentence, arguing that the attack was inhumane and intentional.
Senior Resident Magistrate Shukran Kumbani ruled that the 12-year sentence would serve as a lesson to others.
