Government through the Ministry of Transport and Public Works has reaffirmed the safety of the newly launched motor vessel (MV) Asidaya, following widespread criticism on social media regarding its safety.
The vessel, launched on Saturday at Monkey Bay Jetty, sparked concerns among the public, with many questioning whether it meets the necessary safety standards for navigating Lake Malawi.
Watson Maingo, spokesperson for the Ministry, assured the public that MV Asidaya has undergone rigorous safety checks and is fully compliant with the Inland Waters Shipping Act. “The vessel meets all the required safety regulations to ensure passenger safety,” Maingo emphasized.
Despite these assurances, several social media users and local vendors, including Mary Mpondaminga, expressed their doubts. “We need more details on the safety features. It’s not just about the vessel looking good—it must be proven safe for the people who depend on it,” Mpondaminga stated.
Engineer Lusungu Msowoya, who supported the Ministry’s claims, pointed out that MV Asidaya is equipped with advanced engineering and safety systems that exceed the standards of other vessels operating on the lake. “The vessel has been designed to offer a safer and more reliable travel experience,” Msowoya said.
While the Ministry stands by the vessel’s safety, the debate continues online, with the public eagerly awaiting further information on the specific safety measures in place.
