The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) has quarantined 340 bags of Urea and NPK fertiliser from Kamwendo Traders in Chiponde, Mangochi, due to non-compliance with local regulations.

MBS spokesperson Monica Khombe confirmed that the fertiliser was found to be underweight, with a 50 kg bag of NPK weighing only 44 kg. Additionally, the product was improperly labeled in Portuguese, violating Malawi Standard 722, which mandates that products be labeled in English or one of Malawi’s official languages.

Khombe further explained that the fertiliser had not been certified under the Import Quality Monitoring Scheme, a requirement for all imported goods. The use of Portuguese on the labels further raised concerns regarding the authenticity and quality of the product.

The MBS has taken action to ensure that only compliant products are allowed into the country, safeguarding both consumers and the market.
