The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested former Northern Region Commissioner of Police, Richard Luhanga, on suspicion of abusing his office.
ACB Head of Investigations, Christopher Kaminjolo, confirmed that Luhanga was not just summoned but formally taken into custody. He is suspected of committing an offence under Section 25 B (1), read together with Sections 25 B (4) and 34 of the Corrupt Practices Act.
According to Kaminjolo, while serving as Commissioner of the Malawi Police Service in Mzuzu between 2022 and 2023, Luhanga allegedly misused his authority for personal gain. He is accused of arbitrarily redirecting paint donated by Press Trust Limited—intended for Mzuzu Police Hospital at the Northern Region Police Headquarters—to his private properties at Nkhozo Estate in Bolero.
ACB acting director general Hillary Chilomba also confirmed Luhanga’s arrest, stating that investigations are ongoing. Luhanga is currently providing a caution statement and will later appear in court.
