The High Court has ruled in favor of Rhoda Chigaru, awarding her K70 million in compensation after she was wrongfully subjected to a surgical procedure that resulted in the removal of her private organ at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Blantyre.

According to the court ruling delivered by Justice Elijah Blackboard Dazilikwiza Pachalo Daniels, the compensation is meant to cover the pain and suffering Chigaru has endured due to medical negligence.

Chigaru had sued Dr. Samuel Meeja and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital through the government’s legal counsel, arguing that the procedure was conducted negligently between 2017 and 2020, causing severe health complications.

Following the ruling, the court ordered that the hospital and the doctor in question take responsibility and ensure the compensation is duly paid to the victim.

This case highlights concerns over medical malpractice and patient safety in public hospitals, with calls for stricter measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
