66 students from Assalam Boys Secondary School in Mangochi District, who are facing charges of arson and property destruction worth over K70 million, were released on bail today.
The students allegedly set fire to classrooms and other property last Saturday after school officials confiscated their mobile phones, citing a violation of school rules.
Initially, police arrested 20 students, but further investigations led to the arrest of 46 more, bringing the total to 66.
Granting bail, First Grade Magistrate Roy Kakutu ordered each student to pay a surety bond of K50,000. Additionally, each student was required to have a witness who could provide a K500,000 surety bond in case of absconding.
All students have since paid the required surety bonds.
It is understood that school authorities and parents have agreed to reimburse the cost of the destroyed property.
