The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has announced that it will roll out a mobile phone based voter verification system starting from May 5 2025.
Speaking during a meeting with traditional leaders in Phalombe District on Wednesday, MEC Chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja explained that the mobile service will particularly benefit individuals who may not be able to travel to designated verification centers.
According to Mtalimanja, the service will be free of charge. Voters who discover any discrepancies in their details will still need to visit their respective registration centers to make the necessary corrections.
To verify their registration details, voters will dial *2509# and enter the voter ID number found on their voter certificate.
The first phase of the in person voter verification process is scheduled to take place from May 13 to May 15.
The initiative is aimed at making it easier for voters to confirm their registration details ahead of the upcoming elections.
