The Phalombe Second Grade Magistrate’s Court has ordered Boniface Kasoti, aged 32, to pay a fine of K600,000 after being found guilty of possessing and attempting to smuggle 300 litres of petrol without a permit.

Phalombe Police spokesperson, Sergeant Jimmy Kapanja, confirmed the ruling and added that the court also ordered the fuel to be forfeited to the Government of Malawi.

When given a chance to speak in court, Kasoti pleaded for a more lenient sentence, explaining that he is responsible for taking care of his family and that he had borrowed money from a village bank to purchase the fuel.

However, Second Grade Magistrate Steve Samati delivered the sentence, stating that it was intended to serve as a deterrent to others and help reduce similar crimes in the country.

Kasoti was arrested on the night of April 18 this year as he attempted to cross into Mozambique with the fuel on a motorcycle near the Likangala border post in Phalombe District.

Boniface Kasoti hails from Nthenda Village, under Traditional Authority Chiwalo in Phalombe District.
