The Tobacco Commission has confiscated 170 bales of tobacco that were found containing foreign materials, including rubbish.
This development comes just three weeks after the official opening of the tobacco market in the country.
The tobacco bales that have been snatched are those that farmers were allegedly adding rubbish and other foreign materials to deceive buyers.
Tobacco Commission spokesperson Telephorus Chigwenembe confirmed the seizure of the 170 bales. He stated that 140 of the bales were confiscated at the Lilongwe Auction Floors, 25 at Chinkhoma, and another 2 at Limbe.
Chigwenembe further said that this year, any money collected from the sale of the seized tobacco will be given directly to the Commission.
