Thyolo First Grade Magistrate’s Court has sentenced 45-year-old Arthur Makolija to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour for defiling a 13-year-old girl.
State Prosecutor Henry Chitandale told the court that on 22 October 2024, Makolija took the girl to Makwasa, where he was building a house. There, he lured her with a promise to buy her a dress similar to one worn by his own child, who is a friend of the victim.
The girl’s mother became suspicious when she noticed her daughter was missing. After enquiring among her friends, she was informed that the child had been taken by Makolija. Upon the girl’s return, the mother questioned her, and the victim disclosed everything, leading to the suspect’s arrest.
In court, Makolija denied the charge, but the state brought forward three witnesses whose testimonies proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.
The court found him guilty and sentenced him to 1o years imprisonment with hard labour.
